Dr. Corinne Hohl gave a presentation to the PAC at the 27 October 2020 meeting

She is an emergency room physician, epidemiologist, is involved with Canada’s national COVID registry, and the parent of a student in grade 8 at Kits. She reviewed the latest data and information about the severity of the disease and transmission risks amongst high school-aged children in BC, Canada, and internationally. This was the collective work of several medical doctors and researchers. You can find a video of her presentation (which she gave to Prince of Wales PAC the following week) here:

26-AUG-2020 Letter to Families – Update September School Restart

Dear students and families,
We look forward to welcoming staff and students safely back to Kitsilano Secondary School this September. I am pleased to share with you that the proposed plan for Vancouver secondary schools shared with you by the District on August 19, 2020, has been approved by the BC Ministry of Education. We are now thoughtfully moving forward to make the necessary adjustments to student timetables. Student timetables will be based on student course requests submitted in the spring.

As you are aware, the BC Ministry of Education has delayed the start of the school year for student attendance. School instruction will resume on Monday, September 14, 2020. Student orientation days will be on Thursday, September 10 and Friday, September 11. When classes resume in September, all schools will adhere to the requirements of the COVID-19 Public Health Office’s Guidance for K-12 School Settings.
Below is more information about the new school year schedule and what to expect in the coming weeks.

Kitsilano Secondary School – September 2020 Newsletter

We are pleased to welcome you to a new school year at Kitsilano Secondary School. This year will be a very new way of schooling and we are hopeful and optimistic that it will be a successful one. We are excited to continue building on all that is good about our school and community.
We recognize that many are feeling anxious and uncertain about returning to school. Please know that the health and safety of our school community remains our key priority. We are working closely with VSB District and school-based staff to ensure the full implementation of the VSB COVID-19 Safety Plan. This plan was developed under the BC Government COVID-19 K-12 Education Plan-Stage 2 mandate.

Weekly Letter to Parents May 01, 2020

Parenting On Your Own Path with Dr. Emily W. King

Parents: What we are being asked to do is not humanly possible. There is a reason we are either a working parent, a stay-at-home parent, or a part-time working parent. Working, parenting, and teaching are three different jobs that cannot be done at the same time. It’s not hard because you are doing it wrong. It’s hard because it’s too much. Do the best you can.

When you have to pick, because at some point you will, choose connection. Pick playing a game over arguing about an academic assignment. Pick teaching your child to do laundry rather that feeling frustrated that they aren’t helping. Pick laughing, and snuggling, and reminding them that they are safe. If you are stressed, lower your expectations where you can and virtually reach out for social connection. We are in this together to stay well. That means mentally well, too.

Letter to Parents Continuity of Learning Assessment

Parent question and answer session with VSB Superintendent Suzanne Hoffman and Board Vice-Chair Carmen Cho about how education is working during the pandemic

A list of the questions covered and a recording of this online meeting held on April 09 by DPAC can be viewed at:

Questions covered such topics as access to technology, support for students with IEPs, indigenous learning, international students, courses through the Vancouver Learning Network, childcare for families of essential workers, who to contact if your child has not heard from a particular teacher, etc. Each question on the list is followed by a time index; these were intended to link directly to that part of the recording, but aren’t working properly. You can however still get to specific questions by opening the recording and sliding the time indicator at the bottom across until you get to the time for the question.
